Cringle 2008

Bill Maher, in the most recent episode of Real Time, defended universal health care on the grounds that government isn't always a bad thing, you just need the right people. True, government is just a place where people do things--it's not good or bad. But when you don't have to rely on people volunteering payment, where do you find this amazing person who side steps paying back cronies and cuts corners? Where is this superman who knows when people are selfishly demanding care they don't need? As much as I'd like to elect Santa Claus, I don't think he's available.

This person is definitely not in any corporate management position.

Uh, I think there's already a magical person that determines if someone needs medical care. If memory serves, that's the doctor's job.

Actually, it's the doctor who provides advice and the patient who decides if the treatment is worth the cost. Give it away for free (or sell it below market price) and you'll get people who normally wouldn't pay for things, asking for them. Shortages appear, lines lengthen. And no one's there to assuage moral hazard.

Yeah, all those people asking to be poked with needles, have tubes shoved up their rectums, be cut open ... all because it's free.

Your brain is free of neurons, it seems.
