1. A woman of extraordinary stature, strength, and courage.
2. A woman regarded as loud, scolding, ill-tempered, quarrelsome, or overbearing.
"Virago" gets the reward for the most ambiguous word in the world.

Well, you conclude that only a woman of great fortitude and strength would want to be such a "bitch." When you look at it like that, the two definitions seem to complement one another.
i kid you not, i saw the virginia license plate "A VIRAGO" on ox road two or three days ago. thanks to you, i found myself wondering what exactly that said about its owner.
then again, i would have been wondering that even if you hadn't posted.
Creepy. If I see that car, I'll have to remember to pull her over and ask.
